Since 2003, Hope for Henry’s comprehensive, year-round program has served more than 50,000 kids at hospitals across the country.
Hope for Henry is committed to excellence. As a result, we continuously seek feedback from child life specialists on the frontlines and the children and families we serve. We developed and use a state-of-the-art program evaluation tool that gamifies data collection and use the results to modify programs to ensure maximum impact.
Feedback on our incentive program consistently points to its direct and positive impact on patients’ ability to cope, improved sense of control, and importantly, increased adherence with medical procedures and protocols. This is good for the child and for the hospital whose improved efficiency leads to cost savings. With respect to our “It’s Your Birthday! by Hope for Henry” program specifically, our child life specialists report that children who are celebrated on their birthdays in the hospital feel happier, more motivated, and, quite simply, very special. This is particularly important given the inability of many caregivers – due to job responsibilities or childcare commitments for their non-hospitalized children – to spend much time in the hospital during the countless days and nights for which their children are hospitalized.
While we like to say that we measure our successes in smiles—and we’ve observed too many of those to count—we are also committed to obtaining more precise measurements of our impact on the patients we serve. To that end, we have engaged renowned researchers at Lurie Children’s Hospital and Sinai Hospital of Baltimore to conduct quantitative studies to document program impact.
